Griffin was drunk and propping up the bar as he engaged in a brag-off with one of the other personal trainers from the gym where he worked and he had been completely oblivious to Amelia, who had been collared by his mother and aunt for another one of their wedding chats. Maxine King had tried to take over planning the whole event and Amelia had reached the point where she felt it was easier to go along with her.

Boxed in and needing to escape, she had eventually excused herself to go to the loo, relieved to find the ladies’ room of the posh hotel empty. Away from the noise of the bar she had spent a few blessed minutes alone, steadying her breathing and reminding herself she had got this, while all the time a nagging little voice kept asking why she was going through with something she wasn’t sure she even wanted.

When she stepped out of the loos, she had been surprised to find Jonah in the corridor. Had he been waiting for her? He was a little drunk and she knew he had been knocking back the whisky, seeming distracted all evening.

‘Is everything okay?’

‘Yeah.’ He glanced around the empty corridor. ‘Fancy getting some air?’

Amelia wondered where Nicole was, though she didn’t question it. The idea of slipping outside and away from Griffin’s mother was far too appealing. ‘Yeah, sure.’ She followed him out of the door.

Griffin was classically chiselled and handsome, but Jonah had that edge, attractive but more in an interesting way, from his slightly crooked nose to the faded scar that slashed across his cheek (a result of a childhood accident), cutting into his dimple when he smiled.

‘Are you?’ He arched a brow, throwing the question back.

‘I’ve had Griff’s mother on at me about table plans for the last forty minutes.’ Amelia rolled her eyes. ‘Would you be having a good time?’

He gave a faint smile. ‘No, probably not.’ He seemed deep in thought for a moment, as if trying to figure how to say whatever was bothering him. ‘Does he make you happy, Amelia?’

She must have looked surprised at his question. ‘Griffin? Why would you ask that?’

‘You’re marrying the guy. I want to be sure.’

‘Okay, well it’s an odd thing to ask, don’t you think?’

‘Is it?’ he pushed. ‘You haven’t answered. Are you? Are you happy?’

Amelia considered the question as she stared at him, trying to figure out where this was coming from, and not quite sure how to answer. She was happy, wasn’t she?

Then something in his expression
